How valuable is Jesus?
Jesus is so valuable that in comparison to our love for Him we must hate everything else. Everything that would become the highest in our hearts over Him.
Here is another claim of Jesus to divinity, to being the very God of the universe. No mere man could ask us to denounce our families, wealth, or even our own selfish pride of self-worth lest He was God in the flesh.
Think of it for a moment. Hate your father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters? This is a spectacular claim for Jesus to make, and as usual, Jesus raises the stakes even higher calling us to hate even our own life.
This isn’t about hate in and of itself per say, because this same God commands us to honor our father and mother, and for husbands to love their wife as Christ loves the church (Matt 15:4, Ephesians 5:25).
So how valuable is this person Jesus?
Is He really that important?
I believe He is, but don’t take my word for it.
Jesus says things like this:
Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4:13-14
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matt 11:28-30
